City Walking Tours
Our regular tours provide an ideal introduction to Alfred the Great’s city, the ancient capital of Wessex and England.
Routes vary, but include a selection of the following: the iconic statue of King Alfred, the historic High Street, the site of Winchester Castle and King Charles II’s Royal Palace, the River Itchen and the ruins of Wolvesey Castle. Also the exteriors of the Great Hall, Winchester College, No. 8 College Street (where Jane Austen died), Winchester Cathedral and the Westgate.
Tours take place all year:

2pm tour Lower Winchester or City Highlights during the Christmas Market : Details here
January – March: Saturdays at 11am and 2pm
April – October: daily at 11am and 2pm (but not Sundays in April, September or October)
November – 21st December: weekdays at 2pm, Saturdays at 11am and 2pm, Sundays 29th November to 20th December at 11am and 2pm.
All tours are listed on our Tours Calendar and tickets can be bought in advance online or on the day from the Winchester Visitor Information Centre, The Guildhall, Broadway, Winchester SO23 9GH from where the tours start.
Tours last approximately 90 minutes and are all on foot. They are accessible to wheelchair users and well behaved dogs on leads are welcome. Tours do not go inside the Cathedral or Great Hall.
